10 Ways to Change Your Mindset

Your perception is your reality. It’s no secret that a change in outlook can completely change your life, so positivity is key! In recovery, it is especially important to take a step back from negative thoughts to recognize that the hardships of early recovery are temporary. No matter how broken you feel, your strength is about to be realized as you face your substance use disorder or alcohol addiction head on. Our holistic approach to addiction treatment treats the mind, body, and spirit. Often times, in recovery, we are quick to focus on all of the things we’ve lost or lost out on in life, however, positive mindsets will allow you to find gratitude in all that you still have.

With the right mindset, it is possible to set and achieve your goals in recovery, becoming a better version of yourself each day. Our treatment programs focus on re-building yourself, giving you the tools to overcome drug or alcohol addiction, and build yourself a life beyond your wildest dreams.

Royal Life Centers at Puget Sound offers intensive therapy that addresses substance abuse and mental health, behavioral health, the root cause of your alcohol or substance use disorder, and more. We use a combination of behavioral therapies, activity therapy, adventure therapy, equine therapy, group therapies, and individual therapy.

Instead of focusing on the negative, let’s shift your mindset and lift you up. Here are 10 ways to change your mindset:

1. listen to music

Royal Life Centers believes in the power of music, to express yourself and to heal. Music has a variety of benefits, and is proven to better both mental and physical health. With benefits like easing muscle tension, lowering your blood pressure, activating your “relaxation response,” bettering your mood, and motivating you.

2. go to a speaker meeting

A “speaker meeting” is a type of 12-step meeting, where a speaker is brought in to talk about their experience, strength and hope in terms of their addiction and recovery. Hearing another person in recovery speak is a truly amazing experience.

3. get moving!

Getting up and exercising is proven to release endorphins, which improve your mood and make you feel happy! So getting up and moving around is always a good way to change your mindset and see positively.

4. watch a comedy

Taking a break to relax and watch something funny is fun, but also has health benefits. Finally, some news that you want to hear. Watching a comedy or a video that makes you laugh will release feel-good chemicals in your brain and make you feel good! So put away the sad memes, and put on an episode of Parks and Recreation. This is the one time I will tell you a movie like Superbad is actually good for your health, so embrace it.

5. smile

Smiling will actually trick your brain into thinking you’re happy, even if you’re feeling sad. So put on a smile, the act of smiling will release dopamine in your brain. It’s all about finding the natural ways to lift your spirits.

6. go outside

Treating alcohol and substance abuse with nature is just one holistic treatment method that we use at Royal Life Centers at Puget Sound. Located in the beautiful pacific northwest, Washington state is full of the beauty that only nature can bring. Being outside and just taking a look around, smelling the flowers, feeling the leaves of trees or the grass underneath you, hearing the birds sing, tasting the mountain air, are grounding techniques that bring you into the present moment.

7. practice mindfulness

Whether it’s meditation, yoga, or drinking a cup of tea— mindfulness can be easy. Mindfulness is bringing your attention to the present moment. So get yourself out of ruminating thought processes and stop dwelling in the past, try sitting quietly and ask yourself what you can attach to each sense (hear, taste, smell, touch, see).

8. make art

Creating artwork can completely shift your mindset. Try using powerful visuals that make you feel happy, peace, serenity, and well-being as inspiration. The process of creating art is extremely therapeutic and has a massive range of benefits.

9. guided meditation

You can find guided meditations online, and listen to them to help yourself get grounded, focused, and feeling positive.

10. read something positive

Reading is underrated. The power of words have no limits, so find a good positive book with meaningful messages. Books are a great way to take a break from your thoughts and feelings, and reading is a healthy habit to form. We recommend books like Eckhart Tolle’s “The Power of Now”; Paulo Coehlo’s “The Alchemist” & M. Scott Peck’s “The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth.”
